EXERCISE TRANSGLOBE start day has finally arrived!

The Army, Royal Navy and RAF racing crews

The countdown has come to an end and the highly anticipated Exercise TRANSGLOBE is due to begin this Saturday 11th July from Portsmouth.

Three 67ft steel hulled yachts named Adventure, Challenger and Discoverer being crewed by Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force personnel, are setting off from a start gate just off Southsea Castle at 1300 hrs on the 11th July 2009, to undertake an adventurous sail training exercise that will circumnavigate the globe under the banner Exercise TRANSGLOBE.

Anyone in the Southsea Common area will be able to see the three yachts commencing their gruelling race and hear the start gun which will be fired by Nick Knowles.

There are 13 legs being sailed over the course of 12 months with crew changes on most legs, allowing over 540 service personnel to experience the thrills, spills and chills of ocean sailing.

Organised by a Tri-Service Project Team and using vessels supplied by the Joint Service Adventurous Sail Training Centre (JSASTC) in Gosport, Exercise TRANSGLOBE has the Royal Patronage of HRH The Duke of York, the full support of the Service Chiefs and our Ambassador, the television presenter Nick Knowles, will fire the starting cannon at 1300 hrs from the Keep at Southsea Castle. Other well-known names supporting TRANSGLOBE include Bear Grylls and Babs Powell together with her husband, the actor Robert Powell.

As a corporate partner and patron, Crewsaver will be providing the three boats taking part with 150 MOD standard issue Crewfit 275N lifejackets. These lifejackets are designed for severe conditions and provide the wearer with maximum protection. They are manufactured by Crewsaver at their factory in Mumby Road, Gosport in Hampshire.

Leg One - yachts head for Lanzarote, Canary Islands, arriving end July.

Further details and progress on the three yachts will be regularly posted on the TRANSGLOBE website, so keep the site bookmarked at: www.exercisetransglobe.com.
